Home Writing Spaces

Create a Beautiful Home Writing Space

I spent many hours sitting on a soft bed, achingly bent over a laptop or notebook, before I had an important thought: “I need a writing space”. Sure, anywhere will do for the sake of writing, but I have found that a dedicated space changed the way I worked. My next thought: “How do you make a writing space from home?” The answer to that question took some trial and error, but after setting up something inspiring and beautiful, I have tips to share.

Find the Perfect Place

Start by finding the best spot to dedicate to writing. There are a few things to consider, so ask yourself these questions:

1: What spaces do I have available? Not everyone has a spare room they can use solely for writing purposes. In this situation, choose your favorite corner of a room to claim as your writing space.

2: Where will I be the least distracted by outside influences? Think about your common distractions and try to pick a less high-traffic area.

3: What kind of desk do I favor? Keep in mind that if you can’t fit or afford a desk in your life right now, taking up a spot at the dinner table as your own works just fine! If you are in the market for a desk, measure the space you have to work with and start looking at what you can make work. There are some desks that convert to standing, multi-functional gaming desks, and simple ones.

4: What kind of chair do I need? Think about your comfort level for this one. You may be spending a lot of your time here, and you’ll want to maximize how much you enjoy being in the space.

Set Up Your Writing Space

Now comes the fun part: setting up. If you already have a work-from-home writing job, chances are you’ve looked into home office ideas already. Take that space to a creative new level with some of these tips so that your motivation for writing doesn't dwindle after hours. Set up a creative writing space with these tips:

  1. Use natural light. A window can liven up your space, providing energy as well as warmth. Motivation hack!

  2. Decorate with inspiring things. Photos of family, objects that spark the imagination, or maybe even a doodle of one of your characters could help here. Don’t forget other books, music, or media you love!

  3. Try hanging a mood board! This can be a great way to keep motivation near without having it sit on your desk. Tiny spaces will benefit from this alternative.

  4. Organize. Ensure things you need are always nearby without creating clutter. Keep essentials such as pens and paper around for any notes you might need to scribble down. If your desk doesn’t have a shelf or drawers, you may want to invest in a small filing cabinet, or a small bookshelf.

Put simply, find your space and own it. When writing feels good, it often sounds good as well. Feel comfortable in your space, fill it with your inspirations, set your intentions for it, and dedicate it to your goals. No matter what type of space you’re working with, these simple steps can ensure you have the creative writing space you need right at home.
